A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible threats posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been advised to avoid talking about secret information in any vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Staff
In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in China-made cars.
The minister stated that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in every contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified level in any car, due to the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause disruption to public transit.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
The broader security situation underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of government operations, from transport use to communication practices.
