RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, after an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
